The VIP in Brazil

VIP is a unique, impactful, low-cost program, originally designed to be delivered in pediatric primary care, to prevent achievement gaps before they occur by supporting parent-child early relational health. It has also proved to be effective in diverse places such as community settings and preschool. VIP has strong evidence based on randomized controlled trials, has grown to 15 locations, and is ready for large-scale expansion.

Global Findings

• Parent-child reading aloud intervention in Brazil led to improved parent-child interactions, with increased cognitive stimulation and enhanced reading quality and quantity.
• Children in the intervention group exhibited higher performance in receptive vocabulary, working memory, and IQ, showcasing the program's positive impact on child development.
• The study suggests that the intervention's benefits extended across various literacy levels, emphasizing the importance of promoting shared reading, even for low-literacy families, in preventive programs.
• Expert evaluations and pre-VIP interviews informed successful translation and adaptation of materials, ensuring cultural appropriateness and efficiency by broadening age ranges.
• Post-participation interviews revealed positive feedback on the acceptability, cultural relevance, and appropriateness of VIP sessions. Findings support the implementation of adapted reading aloud programs in remote areas of Brazil and other low- to middle-income countries.
